4.1 Key findings

Clotrimazole was the best in stopping the growth of the yeast compared to the Miconazole and Terbinafine before and after the results were averaged.This was followed by Miconazole and then Terbinafine. After leaving the set up to produce results and recording the results for 30 minutes, we managed to find out the fact that Clotrimazole is the most effective anti fungal to stop the growth of fungus. Clotrimazole was able to prevent the amount of carbon dioxide from increasing as fast as when Miconazole or Terbinafine was put in the yeast solution with the activated yeast.

Comparing all the results with the control we conclude that Clotrimazole is the best at deterring the growth of the fungus.Thus from this, we shall say that people should use clotrimazole to cure their fungal diseases.

From research we found out that azoles were the most preffered antifungals for curing yeast infections(Clin Dermatol,2004). Thus, we had gotten a result that is similar to the the findings that this website had found. Since we used yeast in our anti fungal experiment that is why the antifungal Clotrimazole and Miconazole were able to produce better results than Terbinafine. This was mainly because through research as said we were able to find out that allyamines work better with fungal infections than yeast infections and azoles work better with yeast infections than fungal infections.

Fungal infections can occur in several places on the body. The most common area are the mouth where the infection is called thrush; on the feet, as athlete's foot; and on the genitals. When a yeast infection develops in a woman's vagina, it causes a type of vaginitis, or inflammation of the vagina. Yeast can also overgrow and cause infection amongst over weight people who have folds of skin that rub against each other creating a dark and moist environment in those folds(Media, E., 2015).

A fungal infection is also known as mycosis. Although most fungi are harmless to humans, some of them are capable of causing disease under specific conditions. Fungi reproduce by releasing spores that can be picked up by direct contact or even inhaled. That’s why fungal infections often affect the lungs, skin, or nails. Fungi can also penetrate the skin to affect your organs and cause a whole body systemic infection.(Inc,H.,2015 March)


Therefore the point of our experiment is focusing on investigating which type of anti fungal is best at curing yeast infections.



4.3 Evaluation of hypothesis


In summary, our results was the closest to the results other researches had found out for curing yeast infections. Thus, our projects would be investigating which anti fungal is best at stopping the growth of anti fungus. To be more detailed, it would be which antifungal is best at stopping the growth of yeast infections. 
Our hypothesis was the Clotrimazole and Miconazole would be more effective than Terbinafine.
Our hypothesis is proven to be correct. This is as Clotrimazole is the most effective anti fungal, followed by Miconazole and finally Terbinafine. In our research proposal, we have also gathered that Clotrimazole or Miconazole would be most effective in stopping the growth of the yeast. This shows that azole anti fungals are better than allyamine anti fungals. Our hypothesis and results can be proven right due to the fact that other researches had also gotten similar results.(Clin Dermatol, 2014)

4.4 Areas for improvement

The project that we did is only based on yeast infections which means that our finding may not be applicable to normal fungal infections. There is an increasing rate of people getting fungal infections in poor countries. One example is Tanzania where the fungal infections and diseases are far from ending. Tanzania  is among countries that are battling to end the spread of fungal and bacteria infection. Efforts are being made by the government and its partners to end the problem which brings suffering to many people especially those in rural areas. The battle is far from over because the problem of infections is still acute among children and adults. This problem is pronounced in rural area where people due to the lack of medical facilities and money to access treatment end up suffering. According to medical studies, skin infections account for the majority of pediatric mortality and morbidity in developing countries. they are prevalent in resource-poor settings and rural areas in certain parts of the world. The studies also say that hot humid and over crowding predispose to skin infections (Mchekadona. J., 2015)

Thus one way we could have done this project such that it would benefit everyone was to collect fungal sample from bread mould and try out the experiment by placing it in a petri dish with the anti fungal and collecting the results.

In terms of procedure:

  1. We could have repeated the experiment more times and should conduct the experiment for a longer time. This would have made our results more accurate and reliable.
  2. We could have used more stable apparatus so that the bottles would not have fallen during the experiment.
